Knowing yourself means knowing your biases, weaknesses, and shortcomings.
Having the knowledge of self is difficult, so how do I get better at this? The key is to surround yourself with people you trust and people who complement you on your weak points. Yet, even when you have it all figured out, a designer's main objective is to solve a problem. If there's no problem statement, then design can't be great design can't be accomplished.
Be an avid listener when it comes to clients and users. Try to understand what their visions are, and then develop your ideas on reaching that vision.
Remember that the final decision never lies with you; with this in mind, things usually don't end up where you wanted it to end up – and that's totally fine.
